Not sure about Couples Therapy?

Hey Hesitant Partner, Let Us Pitch You on Why Couples Therapy is Worth a Try

We may be biased but couples therapy can be super helpful for romantic relationships struggling with things like communication, intimacy, or other dynamic problems. But in our experience some partners can be hesitant to try therapy, worrying that it could make things worse, that it's a sign of failure or that they will be blamed for all the problems.  The couples therapist could be out to get me!

If you're one of those hesitant people, we get it.  Therapy is scary. Being open and honest is vulnerable.  We would fear getting attacked and blamed too.  It's important to know that couples therapy isn't about blaming anyone or making one person "fix" the other. Instead, it's a protected and supportive space where both of you can learn how to communicate better, solve conflicts, and build a stronger relationship.

Here are some of the benefits of couples therapy if you're feeling a bit hesitant:

  • It can help you understand your partner's point of view. When you're in a relationship, it's easy to get stuck in your own way of seeing things and not see things from your partner's perspective. Couples therapy can help you understand your partner's needs, wants, and feelings, which can lead to more empathy and compassion.

  • It can help you identify and solve conflicts. All couples have conflicts, but how you handle them makes a big difference in your relationship's health. Couples therapy can teach you how to communicate better, solve conflicts in a positive way, and build a stronger foundation for your relationship. Think of your therapist as a master guide helping you recognize the conflict then build your map and tools to work your way out of the cycle.

  • It can help you improve your communication skills. Communication is key in any relationship, but it can be especially tough in romantic relationships. Couples therapy can help you learn how to communicate your needs, wants, and feelings clearly and respectfully.  Your therapist may or may not utilize Role Play, a favorite of mine if you give it a chance.

  • It can help you build a stronger relationship. Couples therapy can help you build a stronger relationship by teaching you how to trust each other, support each other, and create a shared vision for the future. Hello to feeling like a couple again!

If you're hesitant about couples therapy, it's important to talk to your partner about your concerns. Let them know that you're open to the idea but that you have some reservations. Once you've both had a chance to talk about your feelings, you can decide together whether or not couples therapy is right for you.  We also recommend giving a call to a few therapists to see which one could be a good fit for you to help with the process of giving couples therapy a chance.
